How we rate SOC 2 auditors
We exist to make a confusing, high-stakes purchase legible. Here is exactly how the directory works — and how we stay independent.
What we score
Each of the 165+ firms we track is assessed on the same criteria. Scores are editorial, based on public information and our own research.
Licensed CPA firms only
Only a licensed CPA firm can issue a SOC 2 report, so that is our baseline for inclusion: every firm in this directory is a licensed CPA auditor that can sign your report. We deliberately leave out compliance platforms and prep consultancies that aren’t CPA firms — they can get you audit-ready, but they can’t issue the attestation.
Framework coverage
We record which reports and frameworks a firm performs — SOC 1, SOC 2 Type 1/2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, PCI — so you can consolidate adjacent needs with one auditor.
Pricing transparency
We map typical engagement ranges from primary sources where possible. Figures still being confirmed are labelled “est.” rather than presented as fact.
Timeline
We track realistic elapsed time from readiness to issued report, because a cheaper audit that slips a quarter can cost a deal.
Fit for stage
A boutique that is perfect for a seed-stage startup is rarely right for a regulated enterprise. We weight fit, not just brand.
How ranking order works
Our overall best SOC 2 auditors ranking lists every firm by its editorial score. Category and region pages re-order that same set by fit for the page: an industry page surfaces firms that specialise in that industry, a country page surfaces firms that explicitly serve it, and a startup or enterprise page weights the tier, price, and timeline that audience actually wants. Score is still the backbone — fit only moves firms of comparable standing.
Among firms of near-equal fit we rotate the order so the same names don’t permanently own the top of every list. Placement is stable per page and never driven by payment.
How we stay independent
Buyers never pay us. The directory is free to use, and our matching service is free for the companies seeking an audit.
We earn money only by matching buyers with firms that fit (lead matching), and we disclose it. We do not sell placement, badges, ratings, or ranking position — every firm’s rating and position is editorial and merit-based, full stop.
Where a figure is sourced from a firm’s own materials, we say so. Where it is an estimate pending verification, we label it. We would rather show our work than overclaim precision.
